We’ve saved the biggest party for last: a multi-venue celebration of art, music, exhibitions, installations and ideas from cutting edge curators.
MAAD (Music & Art After Dark) will take over the West End with a multi-venue celebration of art, music, exhibitions, installations and ideas from cutting edge creators for a one-night-only block party on the final weekend. From 4pm on Saturday 31 July, galleries, stages and laneways in the northwest corner of the CBD will come to life to present a dynamic line up of acclaimed local and international artists.
On the MAAD Outdoor Stage, a towering beacon of light and sound in the centre of George Street, our Luminary Artists in Residence, The Avalanches will bring the inaugural event to a crescendo with an electrifying DJ set. Earlier in the
evening, the stage will host Melbourne DJ and fashion designer Soju Gang, and South Sudanese born, now Adelaide local, hip hop artist DyspOra.
MAAD joins forces with international electronic and experimental music and sound platform, Unsound for two ticketed events at Jive and Lion Arts and a much-anticipated return of Unsound to Adelaide. The Jive line up includes Melbourne's internationally renowned underground duo HTRK; experimental icons MY DISCO; Sydney’s maestro of ambient music, Del Lumanta; and Aviva Endean’s Vibrato Virtual, where attendees become part of an audience operated, multi-speaker sound system, using their mobile phones. Lion Arts Factory hosts Berlin based DJ Plead with his unique Lebanese-influenced palette; New Zealand electronic artist Air Max ’97; Void, a new Unsound-commissioned music video collaboration between Kenya’s Slikback and encryption’s Weirdcore; video artist and cinematographer CAPITAL WASTE; and Filipina-Australian producer, composer and performer Corin.
Nexus Arts’ music and art program starts with a performance from award-winning percussive artist Matthias Schack-Arnott and a solo set from composer and clarinettist Aviva Endean, and concludes with PRIMORDIAL from pianist and composer Gabriella Smart, a soundscape experience that re-enacts the shifting of tectonic plates to form the Flinders Rangers.
Lion Arts Courtyard will host a free performance from Iwiri Choir, <link to new page> an Adelaide based choral group who sing in Pitjantjatjara language in the Ernabella Choir tradition. Adjacent to the Courtyard, MAAD will welcome audiences into their Breezeway Bar, a communal art space serving up Yalumba Wines and Sparkke brews as well as a DJ program and a VR installation by local artist, Jess Taylor <link to new page> throughout the night. Leaving the Breezeway Bar to explore the gallery program, vistors can witness Margie Medlin’s Cinematic Experiments, <link to new page> projected onto the Hawke Centre and surrounds as part of MAAD’s installation program.
West end galleries will be throwing open their doors from 5pm, inviting audiences to explore existing exhibitions at night, as well as specially programmed events at ACE Open, MOD., Jam Factory, Mercury CX, SASA Gallery, Samstag Museum of Art, Nexus Gallery, APY Gallery and more! Local music venues will also get MAAD with Peter Rabbit hosting an urban garden party in the midst of a concrete jungle and West Oak Hotel teaming up with Sunny's Pizza <link to new page> for a night of pizza and $10 passionfruit mojitos under the disco ball.
