On the heels of its 10th birthday, Unsound still defies place and time.

Embracing the unknown and cutting edge of seldom-explored musical frontiers, Unsound is something amorphous, undefinable, unmatchable. Over two massive nights set to rattle the windows of Dom Polski Centre, this is a must for any brave-hearted, adventure driven music fan.

Impossible to capture through your headphones, Unsound Adelaide has to be experienced in the flesh….

Curated by Unsound Artistic Directors, Mat Schulz and Gosia Plysa.

Friday Line-up

Lee Gamble and Candela Capitán present: Models – Adelaide exclusive
Marco Fusinato presents Ashes of Cloud - Premiere
Jim O’Rourke & Eiko Ishibashi
Bendik Giske
33EMYBW & Joey Holder - Adelaide exclusive

Unsound Adelaide offers up a carefully curated night of powerful, innovative music that reaches into the worlds of dance and visual arts. Opening is the Unsound and Sonar-commissioned work Models, with the UK’s Lee Gamble collaborating with Spanish choreographer/action artist Candela Capitán. Together they bring his Hyperdub album Models to the stage, exploring AI-generated and synthetic-widescreen memories.

Acclaimed Australian visual artist and musician Marco Fusinato performed his work DESASTRES at the 59th Venice Biennale for 200 consecutive days, improvising slabs of noise that trigger images. Tonight he premieres Ashes of Cloud, an improvised noise-guitar performance with accompanying video montage filmed by Fusinato.

Composer, musician and producer Jim O’Rourke is renowned for his solo work, as well as his collaborations with a huge number of bands and artists, from Gastr del Sol and Sonic Youth, to Smog, Wilco and Joanna Newsom. Tonight he performs a very rare show outside his base in Tokyo, appearing with musician and singer-songwriter Eiko Ishibashi, best known outside Japan for her acclaimed scores for the films Drive My Car and Evil Does Not Exist.

Norwegian saxophonist Bendik Giske is devoted to fearless exploration of his body - its boundaries and its meanings - using the technique of circular breathing with saxophone to achieve mesmerising effects. His debut show in Australia is sure to astonish.

Closing with an Unsound Adelaide exclusive is Shanghai’s 33EMYBW, a Shanghai-based musician and core member of the city’s electronic / experimental scene. She performs a live A/V show with visual artist Joey Holder, commissioned by Unsound and Illuminate Adelaide.

Saturday Line-Up

Yirinda
Ale Hop & Laura Robles present Agua Dulce - Adelaide exclusive
The Caretaker - Adelaide exclusive
∈Y∋ + C.O.L.O - Adelaide exclusive
Kim Gordon

The second night of Unsound Adelaide 2024 straddles the line between experimental, pop, ambient and noise – and is stacked with bonafide legends. Kim Gordon was once a member of Sonic Youth, and now at age 70 has released The Collective, a daring album full of blown out trap beats and industrial noise; as Pitchfork said, Gordon “is still cooler, smarter, and more fearless than most”.

Leyland Kirby performs his first show ever in Australia as The Caretaker, an exclusive appearance Down Under after harnessing a huge following for his distinct music, which explores memory, loss and disintegration. His magnum opus Everywhere At The End of Time has more than 30 million plays on Youtube alone, inspiring countless homages, and videos investigating its meaning. Live, expect the unexpected – The Caretaker always delivers a one-of-a-kind experience.

∈Y∋ – aka EYE – is also a singular and pioneering artist; he last  appeared in Australia almost 15 years ago with his band Boredoms; now, with another exclusive Adelaide show, he’ll perform a solo show that blurs the lines between live and DJ set, moving from noise to the bleeding edge of club music, with C.O.L.O presenting visuals.

Yet another Adelaide exclusive tonight is Agua Dulce, with Peruvians Laura Robles and Ale Hop radically deconstructing Afro-Peruvian music and dance traditions. While Ale Hop performs on guitar and abstract electronics, Robles plays the cajón, a Peruvian box drum made by slaves at the end of the Spanish colonial era. This is music of the past, present and future.

Opening is Yirinda, combining ancient Aboriginal language with sublime modern production, invoking thousands of generations of story and culture, while emerging as something entirely new.
